Google updates its weather forecasts with a new AI model

An illustration from Google’s new AI weather model. | Image: Google Google debuted a new and improved AI weather model today that will be incorporated into popular products like Search, Gemini, and Pixel phones.  The company’s AI-enhanced forecasts have proven themselves to be quite accurate so far. AI weather models have also been able to make predictions faster and more efficiently than conventional physics-based models. Until now, Google’s work in this area has been mostly experimental. Now, it’s making those predictions a selling point for Google products and services.  “We’re taking it out of the lab and really putting it…

Blue Origin reusable rocket successfully lands for the first time

The first stage of the New Glenn rocket built by Blue Origin landed vertically on a ship at sea after carrying two NASA spacecraft into space. The New Glenn rocket lifted off from the launch pad at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida, at 3:45 p.m. on November 13, carrying two NASA Mars spacecraft and a technology test device for satellite communications company Viasat. About three minutes later, the main engine shut down and the rocket began to separate as planned. After separation, the second rocket stage continued to carry the pair of NASA spacecraft into space, while the first…

Sky Sports killed off its female-focused Halo brand after just three days

Girls like pink and peach, right? That Sky Sports felt the need to launch a TikTok channel specifically marketed towards women and billed as its “lil sis” was questionable enough. But once people got a taste of the content on Halo, it was clear the company had absolutely no idea what it was doing. Halo didn’t focus on women’s sports, nor did it seem to be doing a good job of elevating female voices in a male-dominated business. Instead, it slapped pink sparkly letters on videos, talked about “hot girl walks,” matcha, and posted shipping memes. Unsurprisingly, the backlash was…

You need to listen to the searing noise pop album Forever in Your Heart

The cover goes as hard as the album does. There's something irresistible about music that sounds as if it's coming apart at the seams. The Black Dresses are masters of barely contained chaos. All of their records feel as if they're in danger of collapsing into pure noise at any moment. But never have they so expertly woven the various threads of their sound - glitchy percussion, pummeling guitars, irresistible pop hooks - together as they do on Forever in Your Heart. The Canadian duo of Ada Rook and Devi McCallion crafts something undeniably catchy from abrasive electronics, metallic percussion,…

Stereogum soldiers on in the era of streaming and AI

If you're an indie rock fan of a certain age, the name Stereogum will probably conjure strong feelings. The site was launched "January 1st, 2002, on a whim," founder Scott Lapatine told The Verge. Originally, this early staple of the music blog era was focused almost entirely on music discovery and posting MP3s. "It was the early days of like Windows Media Player and Real Player," Scott remembers. Today, the site is focused on music journalism and has just relaunched to keep up with a media landscape being overrun by AI. Lapatine has been with Stereogum from the beginning, and…

How LimeWire ended the Napster music revolution

Quick: tell me how old you are by telling me which app you used to download free music. Was it Napster? Kazaa? Usenet? Gnutella? WinMX? Morpheus? The Pirate Bay? Were you, I don't know, sending your friends songs on AIM or BBM? The possibilities are endless. For a decade or so, if you were online, you were probably stealing music. For this episode of Version History, we're telling the story of one of the last big names in file sharing: LimeWire. If the era of mainstream access to free music (mostly on college campuses and other fast networks) starts with…

Tim Cook could step down as Apple CEO next year

Wave goodbye. According to the Financial Times, Tim Cook could step down as Apple CEO as early as next year. And the board has started to seriously work out a succession plan. FT says that John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice-president of hardware engineering, is considered the frontrunner for the position. Cook, who turned 65 recently, has been CEO for 14 years and overseen both incredible growth and his fair share of controversies. He’s also largely seen as responsible for Apple’s shift to outsourcing manufacturing, which has enabled it to operate at much larger scales than it did traditionally.  Rumors of Cook’s stepping down follow…

Possessor(s) is a fast-paced action game that gets off to a slow start

I remember being blown away by the 2024 reveal trailer for Possessor(s), the new game from Hyper Light Drifter developer Heart Machine. The trailer features a striking art design, where an animated 2D character explores and fights in side-scrolling environments with gorgeous 3D backgrounds, and it's all set to moody, powerful music. The final game, which came out this month, wasn't quite as awe-inspiring as that initial trailer made it seem, and I almost quit it - but I'm really glad I saw it to the end. In Possessor(s), you play as Luca, a girl who is possessed by Rehm,…
