iOS 18.1 brings several key improvements, including call recording and the Apple Intelligence feature.
The first major update to iOS 18 will be available for download on the evening of October 28, more than a month after the operating system’s official release. The new version supports devices released from 2018, such as the iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and newer models.
With an upgrade size of nearly 2 GB from version 18.0.1, iOS 18.1 adds features that Apple introduced at WWDC in June. For the first time, users can record calls directly on iPhone.

Apple states that the Call Recording feature allows users to capture audio from phone calls or FaceTime directly. A recording button will appear once the call is connected, and recording will begin approximately three seconds after pressing. An automatic announcement will play to inform all participants that the call is being recorded. The recorded audio will then be saved in Notes.
A small change to the camera is the addition of a quick-switch button to the TrueDepth front camera on the iPhone 16. The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max add support for spatial photo and video capture.
When iOS 18 launched with a redesigned Control Center, many users complained about the extra steps needed to quickly access Wi-Fi and Bluetooth controls. This has been addressed in iOS 18.1 by separating these controls back into individual buttons that users can customize as desired.
Additionally, several other updates focus on bug fixes, such as a stuttering issue when recording 4K 60 fps video, restart issues on the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro, and problems when unlocking cars with the phone.
For AirPods users, from AirPods Pro 2 onwards, the iOS 18.1 update also introduces adjustments like hearing tests and hearing assistance features.
Moreover, with iOS 18.1, the initial set of Apple Intelligence features is now available to users. However, this feature is limited to iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, and the iPhone 16 series. The Apple Intelligence language features are currently only available in U.S. English.
To upgrade, users can go to Settings > General > Software Update on their iPhone. Before updating, it’s recommended to back up the device, plug it into a charger or fully charge the battery, and connect to a stable Wi-Fi network.
