Nvidia and Intel’s $5 billion deal is apparently about eating AMD’s lunch

Nvidia and Intel’s $5 billion deal is apparently about eating AMD’s lunch

Today, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan held a joint webcast to explain just why the world's most valuable company (Nvidia's at $4.28 trillion) is throwing a $5 billion lifeline to a struggling competitor. Nvidia quickly shut down several possible explanations. Huang claimed it had nothing to do with Trump, who famously shook down Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan for the United States' own 10 percent stake of Intel, shortly after shaking down Nvidia for 15 percent of its revenue selling chips to China. (China may have just ended that.) And, Huang insisted, it's not a strategic shift…

Meta is making the metaverse look better

Meta is making improvements to its Roblox-like social platform Horizon Worlds, with the biggest upgrades being the introduction of a new game engine with better graphics as well as the Meta Horizon Studio to help creators to make custom in-game experiences. Meta Horizon Studio is an editor that lets creators make VR worlds. Creators can already use generative AI tools to create things like textures and audio, and Meta will bring an AI assistant to the editor later this year to help creators with development. In a demo I saw at Connect 2025, a developer had a conversation with an…

Can Luigi Mangione get too big to jail?

Can Luigi Mangione get too big to jail?

The first people in line on Tuesday, I was told, started camping out on the sidewalk two days ago. Luigi Mangione, the man accused of gunning down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024, was due in court at 9AM ET for a hearing in one of three concurrent criminal cases against him. And this time everyone was prepared for the mayhem: the signs, the fans, the livestreamers, the protests, the media circus. That's why the line started even earlier than last time - the people who really wanted to get in to see him knew that no time was…

Sam Altman says ChatGPT will stop talking about suicide with teens

On Tuesday, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that the company was attempting to balance privacy, freedom, and teen safety - principles that, he admitted, were in conflict. His blog post came hours before a Senate hearing focused on examining the harm of AI chatbots, held by the subcommittee on crime and counterterrorism and featuring some parents of children who died by suicide after talking to chatbots. "We have to separate users who are under 18 from those who aren't," Altman wrote in the post, adding that the company is in the process of building an "age-prediction system to estimate age…

Charlie Kirk’s death got complicated by gamer brainrot

Editor's note: This issue of Regulator was sent to subscribers prior to the release of the indictment against Tyler Robinson. Though we have more hints about Robinson's motives, what follows is still accurate about the videogame-referencing memes being a red herring. Hello and welcome to Regulator. For a moment, the fatal shooting of conservative activist and influencer Charlie Kirk last week pushed an already divided nation to its brink. Members of Congress screamed at each other on the House floor: Democrats blamed Republicans for fostering gun culture and mass shootings, while Republicans blamed Democrats for branding them "Nazis" and ……

Consumer Reports asks Microsoft to keep supporting Windows 10

Consumer Reports asks Microsoft to keep supporting Windows 10

Consumer Reports is calling on Microsoft to extend the October 14th deadline that will cut off free security updates for Windows 10 computers. In a letter to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, Consumer Reports says the move will “strand millions of consumers” who have machines incompatible with Windows 11. As noted by Consumer Reports, data suggests that around 46.2 percent of people around the world still use Windows 10 as of August 2025, while around 200 to 400 million PCs can’t be upgraded to Windows 11 due to missing hardware requirements. In the letter, Consumer Reports calls Microsoft “hypocritical” for urging…
