Huawei launches HarmonyOS Next, ‘farewell’ to Android

HarmonyOS Next is Huawei’s first operating system built completely independent of Android.

Launched on October 22, HarmonyOS Next will run on a wide range of Huawei products, from smartphones, wearables, and smart home devices to car control systems.

The platform features a new system architecture, using a self-developed microkernel called Hongmeng Kernel. This kernel differs from the Linux architecture used in Android, meaning Android apps will not be able to run on HarmonyOS Next devices.

Richard Yu, President of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, stated that there are currently 15,000 applications and services supporting HarmonyOS Next, with more apps being developed. Huawei previously reported that over one billion devices globally are using HarmonyOS, including smartphones, tablets, and in-car entertainment systems.

HarmonyOS Next works across multiple types of Huawei devices.

HarmonyOS Next has an intuitive interface, a redesigned control center, and introduces AI features based on the Pangu large language model. According to Huawei, operations on the new OS will be 30% smoother and reduce energy consumption by 20% compared to the previous version.

The Huawei Share 2.0 feature will offer seamless connectivity, allowing devices on the same OS to quickly share data with one another. For example, users can transfer 1.2 GB of data between two HarmonyOS Next devices in 8 seconds. The platform is also equipped with the Star Shield security tool.

A trial version has already been released for users in China. The list of devices supporting HarmonyOS Next includes the Pura 70 Series, Huawei Pocket 2, and MatePad Pro 11.”
