Apple’s much-anticipated WWDC 2024 keynote unveiled a wave of groundbreaking advancements in artificial intelligence, introducing “Apple Intelligence.” These features promised to revolutionize user experience across iPhones, iPads, and Macs. However, excitement quickly turned to disappointment for some iPhone 15 users as Apple revealed the new system wouldn’t be compatible with the standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models.

So, what gives? Why is the latest iPhone left out of the AI party? While the iPhone 15 boasts the powerful A16 Bionic chip, analysts believe the culprit lies in memory limitations. Ming-Chi Kuo, a renowned Apple analyst, suggests that the standard iPhone 15’s 6GB of DRAM falls short of the 8GB found in the Pro models. This seemingly small difference proves crucial for Apple Intelligence.
Apple’s large language model, a core component of the system, reportedly requires a consistent 2GB of free DRAM for tasks like voice and text recognition. With only 6GB total, the standard iPhone 15 struggles to allocate enough resources for smooth AI operations. On the other hand, the iPhone 15 Pro’s extra 2GB allows it to comfortably run these features.
This decision has sparked debate among tech enthusiasts. Some understand the technical limitations, while others express frustration, considering the relatively small price difference between the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro. Apple has yet to officially comment on whether future software updates might extend Apple Intelligence to the standard iPhone 15, but for now, it appears users will need to upgrade to the Pro line to experience the full potential of Apple’s AI revolution.
One thing remains clear: Apple Intelligence signifies a significant shift towards AI-powered devices. While the standard iPhone 15 may miss out on the initial wave, future iterations are likely to bridge the gap as Apple refines its technology and potentially increases base RAM capacity.
