According to a reliable source, the iPhone 17 could come with 12GB of RAM, on par with the Galaxy S25 Ultra.
Apple has never really taken the iPhone’s RAM seriously. It wasn’t even mentioned at the launch event, nor is it prominently featured in the iPhone feature list on the company’s website.

The Cupertino giant has never tried to match Android flagships in terms of RAM, especially Samsung’s high-end lineup. However, that could eventually change, with the iPhone 17 expected to have the same amount of RAM as the Galaxy S25 Ultra.
Analyst Ming-chi Kuo predicts that Apple is working to equip the entire iPhone 17 lineup with 12GB of RAM. In the previous generation, even the high-end Pro Max model had a maximum of 8GB of RAM.
In particular, Kuo believes that Apple wants to ship all iPhone 17 models with 12GB of RAM, including the thin and light iPhone 17 Air, to compete with Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Edge. However, the plan may face supply chain issues, forcing them to use 8GB of RAM for the base iPhone 17. Apple is finalizing its assessment and will make a final decision in May.
Even if the iPhone 17 keeps the same RAM capacity as its predecessor, all iPhone 18s will have 12GB of RAM next year.
In addition, Kuo estimates that the average selling price of 12GB RAM is up to 50% higher than 8GB RAM, creating a huge opportunity for Apple suppliers, including Micron and SK Hynix.
In the past, to defend its stance of not increasing the RAM capacity on the iPhone, Apple has always argued that the combination of hardware and software brings higher efficiency, without having to use up all the RAM. As Apple Intelligence expands, the company is forced to increase RAM to ensure consistency across devices while also ensuring enough memory is available for AI features.
An iPhone 17 with 12GB of RAM would be on par with the Galaxy S25 Ultra. All versions of the Galaxy S25 Ultra come with 12GB of RAM, and in some markets, up to 16GB, a number that Apple may not consider for the next few years.
